2 Plastic pollution: how chemical recycling technology could fix it

To overcome the huge environmental concerns created by plastic we need to start valuing plastic waste as a resource. This means the monomer can be recovered in what’s called closed-loop recycling or the plastic waste can be transformed into other higher-value chemicals in open-loop recycling. While mechanical recycling involves melting, chemical recycling relies on a chemical transformation and thus breaking the links between monomers. Traditional methods are usually costly and energy or resource intensive, which has limited their widespread use. Chemical recycling Plastics are made up of long-chain molecules known as polymers, which consist of smaller repeating building blocks called monomers.

4 Digital Transformation In Aerospace And Defense Applications

Microelectronics is a crucial part of it all. Digitalization in aerospace & defense applications. Some of the largest aerospace and defense companies presented various related aspects last year, focusing on the key themes of safety, security, and digital twins. Several vital trends drive the aerospace and defense domain, including offshoring aspects and a growing number of cyberattacks requiring new safety and security levels.

Bringing hardware and software together, BAE, Dover, and Cadence showed real-time cybersecurity protection for an aerospace and defense system, preventing the exploitation of software vulnerabilities by immunizing processors against entire classes of network- based cyberattacks. Every instruction executed is monitored to ensure compliance with a defined set of security, safety, and privacy rules.

5 Cooling homes without warming the planet

Now the startup Transaera is working to curb those energy demands with a more efficient air conditioner that uses safer refrigerants to cool homes. The company’s foundational work with MOFs has continued even as Transaera’s air conditioner gets closer to commercialization. The surge will multiply what is already a major source of greenhouse gas emissions: Air conditioning is currently responsible for almost 20 percent of electricity use in buildings around the world. The company is currently a finalist in a global competition to redesign the air conditioner. Most people think air conditioners only cool the air in a space, but they also dry the air they’re cooling.

6 Reinstating net neutrality in the US

Net neutrality preserves the environment that allowed the internet to become an engine for economic growth. While there are many challenges that need to be resolved to fix the internet, reinstating net neutrality is a crucial down payment on the much broader internet reform that we need. In California, residents will have the benefit of these fundamental safeguards as a result of a recent court decision that will allow the state to enforce its state net neutrality law. The need for net neutrality protections has become even more apparent during the pandemic.
